Day 102: Stehekin Hero
The shuttle taking Sandman and I into Stehekin departed the trail at 9am meaning we must the 8ish miles before then. I didn’t sleep well last night so my morning started with double instant coffee packets and a Coca-Cola a SOBO gave me on trail yesterday. That did the trick. I was WIRED all morning, which made my bed head even better since it looked like I was struck by lightning.
Stehekin is a cool “town” located in North Cascades National Park and is only accessible by the outside world via boat, horse, or on foot. There is a world class bakery which the shuttle stops at on its way into town. I ordered a huge, fresh cinnamon roll, and grabbed two more from the discounted, day-old shelf to hike out with me.
The shuttle then took us into the town where Sandman, a cool SOBO hiker we met named ‘Yard Sale’, and I received our resupply boxes from the post office, and spent the day lounging around.
There is no cell phone reception and the wifi is poor so it was a long tedious process to upload my blog posts and nigh impossible to add pictures, which is why the last few posts don’t initially have photos. A shame since that section was stunning.
I ‘showered’ and ‘did laundry’ by getting in the lake. Time flew by until the shuttle was ready to take us back to trail at 2pm. It stopped once more at the bakery (so of course I ordered a piece of pizza).
I hiked out alone with a goal to clock another 17 miles before setting up camp. Sandman decided to nap at the trail head and would catch up with me later.
I quit a little early choosing instead to camp at a spot 14 miles down trail and left Sandman directions where I went. We’ll see in the morning if he caught the hint.
Oh. The blog post is called a ‘Stehekin Hero’ because a Hero is when you get in and out of town the same day. A surprisingly hard thing to do.
