Day 3: 10 by 10

I slept well considering I practically slept on the ground, but I guess hiking all day will do that to you.

The morning was cold so I got moving quick. My route follows dirt roads used by ranchers so my pace was quick. I knocked out my first 10 miles by 10am, which will be a daily goal once I hit the PCT.

I saw 2 small herds of antelope (or maybe it was the same herd twice). They took off at full gallop once they saw me.

Around 11:30, I approach the next ranch on my route to see Justin from the night before. The ranch owner, Charles, let me sit under some shade for lunch. He wasn’t around when I first left, but we ran into each about a mile outside of the ranch as he rode his horse. He mentioned the last 18 months were the driest on record here. I bade him a good day to which he said looking around, “every day is a good day when trotting horse”. This brought a smile to my face.

The next 12 miles would get me to the next ranch for a solid water source before camp. Unfortunately, those 12 miles were with no shade.

I finally found a campsite free of sharp objects so I’ll finally get to use a functional sleeping pad.
