Day 8: Rollercoaster
It wasn’t freezing in the morning when I woke, unlike the prior few mornings. A good thing for the first 30 minutes, but usually that calls for a hot day.
I covered 15 miles before 11 to arrive in town. Before entering the local diner, I took care to change out of my “hiking” shirt and into my “sleeping” in hopes I’d smell less raunchy. Two long days in the heat doesn’t leave me smelling desirably.
I quickly ordered a water, coffee, and a big breakfast. The portion sizes did not disappoint.
I sat at the dinner for a little over 2 hours changing my electronics and drinking water. My parents originally mailed it to the post office, but I arrived Sunday and it would’ve been closed. Thankfully, the lady delivered my box to the local grocery store so I could pick it up.
After purchasing ice cream and SPF 70 sunscreen, I took my box outside to reload and hit the road.
Shortly after two, I dragged myself out of town, which was hard because I was so full from the meals in town and my pack was heavier. Compared to the rest of the dirt roads I’ve been on, the route this afternoon was like a roller coaster ride -- up, down, up, down, up, down, and up -- over the rolling mountains outside of town.
Even still, the day was mostly downhill. I am camped at 3,081 feet tonight but started the morning at 5,600.
