Day 57: a new human
10 hours of sleep can do wonders to a person. I woke up tentatively... afraid the exhaustion and sickness would still be lingering. It wasn’t! I made coffee to start the day just in case I needed the energy.
After a brief uphill, the rest of the miles to Sierra City were cruisy, downhill miles. I covered the 11.5 miles to the road where I’d hitch by 9:30, and even caught up to Sandman in the process since he’d went further than me the prior day. I couldn’t stop smiling all morning because I felt so much better.
I had a resupply box waiting for me at the Red Moose Cafe, and promptly ordered coffee and two breakfasts (their eggs Benedict was to-die-for). I topped off my breakfast with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s Cookie Dough ice cream, repacked my bag, read the notes my nephews wrote to me (thanks Lucas and Nicholas!) and then Sandman and I caught a hitch back up the road to the trail.
The 7 miles out of town were almost entire uphill, but less steep than the Sierra’s so we made excellent time.
In the final miles to camp, I went to cross a creek but stepping on a log. It rolled out from underneath and I went back first into the creek absolutely soaking myself. Well at least I was a little cleaner than before.
It is officially mosquito season. The buggers are out in full force. I think I killed no less than 15 of them.
It feels good to feel good again. An excellent day on trail.
