Day 106: Oroville

Today would the last day Sandman and I would be hiking together, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The terrain would be entirely road walking downhill until we reached the town of Oroville, WA located at elevation 200 ft. Since we camped at 6,000 ft, it was all downhill and easy. The road made it easy to hike side-by-side so we spent the morning laughing at each other as we relived parts of the adventure.

We stopped to make coffee at a dope campsite alongside the road that had a picnic table and a stream. Shortly after leaving here, we saw a black bear sprint across the road in front of us.

I “showered” in the creek.

The day quickly got hot and the road made it feel like we were hiking in an oven. There was a lake with a beach further down the road where we stopped to swim and cool off. At the lake we saw an osprey swooped down and catch a fish out of the lake.

Sandman was going to put his shoes back on when he noticed a hole in the heal of his shoes. He literally walked a hole in them, which is crazy considering the heel of the shoe is like an inch thick.

Since it was in the upper 90s, we called in a shuttle to take us into Oroville to get a hotel room and dinner. Sandman would come back to walk the remaining 22 miles of road during the night when it was cooler.

The hotel in Oroville was the nicest, most budget friendly place I stayed out on the entire trail. They had bikes for us to borrow to get around town, which made getting to the dinner place so much faster.

Post-dinner, we each order a 32 oz milk shake. That size should be illegal unless you’re hiking!

We couldn’t ask for a more perfect last day of hiking together.
