Day 50: An extra road walk

The breakfast at Kennedy Meadows North did not disappoint. I ordered sausage, biscuits and gravy, eggs, hashbrowns, a side of pancakes, and of course coffee. I gave my parents a call to catch up, and they shared they’d been up in Fort Wayne to watch one of my nephews play golf, the other play flag football, and also to celebrate early my sister’s birthday.

After that, Sandman and I procrastinated a little bit until packing up our stuff to head out. A nice lady (Little Feather is her trail name) staying at the resort asked us a few questions about our gear and then asked if we wanted a ride to the road closure. Heck yeah we did.

After that began a 9 mile road walk to Sonora Pass where we gained almost 4K of elevation. The road would open the next day but we couldn’t afford to sit around and not head back to the trail.

The first 6 miles of trail were covered in snow and a few times I sank waist deep into the powder. We even had to climb a small snow wall at the top of one of the mountains.

Luckily, the snow began to disappear after that, which hopefully holds true for the remaining 60ish miles to South Lake Tahoe.

As we began searching for a campsite, we saw some sick bear prints in the snow. We hiked a few extra miles to put some distance between us.
