Day 75: Win Some, Lose Some
Some days you win, some days you lose. Today I mostly lost.
For whatever reason, my muscles felt fatigued from the start of the day to the finish making each step a grind. Perhaps I am tired because I crossed the 2,000 mile mark of my hike in the early AM... but that certainly couldn’t be it 😉. Usually, I start the day fresh, go through an energy slump for an hour or two in the afternoon, and then get a 2nd wind in the evening. On day 75, I don’t think I even got a 1st wind. My legs felt like I’d done a hard workout the day before.
Around mile 10, we entered the homeland of the mighty mosquito. I stopped to .. uh.. take care of business only to be overtaken by a horde of skeeters. Fastest business of the trip.
Stopping for water was an even more dangerous affair for the mosquitos were on me in an instance, which I made slightly better by putting on pants and my rain jacket.
I missed a turn and continued to walk downhill for .4 miles before I realized my mistake.
We ran into more snow today, which brought about my highlight for the day: a long, several hundred feet glissade (think sliding on my butt) down the mountain. The other highlight came from packing up camp in the morning when a fellow hiker came over to offer me some coffee he’d made. Coffee is good as gold out here and it was a good start to the day, even if it only lasted briefly.
Our campsite fortunately was relatively mosquito free. I’m hoping to catch some extra sleep tonight to allow my muscles to recover.
