Visiting Limeuil
Just a short 50 minute walk (or 10 minute drive) away from the yoga training is a beautiful, old-in-only-a-European-way town, Limeuil, which lays on the confluence of two rivers. People have lived in this location since at least 12,000 years ago, and there still remain traces of the first Roman structures that were built in 50 B.C. The stone walls surrounding the village were built shortly afterwards and still remain today when looking at the town, which is set in the hill side where one must walk steep narrow stone streets to make it to the top.
I'd first heard of (and visited) this cultural town due to the fact there is a bar with a veranda right on the river. Hey… after all of this yoga training, I needed a beer. The bar was chill and touristy but it was outside and the setting sun beautiful against the river - really all one could ask for. The server was quintessential French, and even to the point where the French people with me remarked on his rudeness. Nonetheless, we enjoyed the beers and the company.
I'd decided I wanted to actually visit the city itself so the following Sunday I made the walk back to the village (and yes, I had another beer) to walk around the old buildings. My town visit concluded with walking in the Panaromic Garden park that featured a 360 degree view of the surrounding country side, old structures from the original castle, and randomly, a giant sequoia tree.
It was neat to be able to visit a medieval village that hasn't changed much over the years. Being from America, our oldest buildings are like 300 years old so seeing much older structures makes really appreciate the history of a place.
