Day 76: Crater Lake National Park
It is always a great start to the day when I can get out of my sleeping bag and not be instantly cold. It was prime temperature to start hiking. Once breaking camp, we sped off towards Mazama Village, a campground in Crater Lake National Park, where ice cream, hopefully two resupply (includes the one I missed from Seiad Valley), and new shoes!
We arrived shortly before 9am. Sandman asked at the counter for his box but they didn’t have it on the list. I instantly was nervous. Upon asking for mine, they only had my name down for 1 box. Uh oh. The manager went to go look, but after a few stressful minutes he returned with 3 boxes in hand. Woooohoo! Sandman called the post office right up the road to find out they had a box in hand for him. A nice lady gave us a ride, but we when we arrived the box for him was a small box from a friend and not the expected box forwarded from our last town. It was strange that my box would arrive but his wouldn’t. He called the post office but no one knew where the box was at. Future problem, I guess.
It worked out that I received 2 boxes because it meant Sandman could have my extra box. We loaded up our bags then headed back to the camp store to pick up a few more items, including more ice cream and bug spray. His mom had included bug spray in the now missing box, so we finally caved and just bought some.
Then off we went back to trail where we decided to take the Crater Lake Rim Trail alternate route instead of the main PCT because the Rim Trail took us along the crater’s rim and provided breathtaking views of the deep blue lake. It was my first time at this national park and it lived up to the hype. I’d been especially looking forward to this one the entire trip.
It was a more relaxed day which was necessary for recovery.
