D32: A Surprise Night Out in Prague
Today is the national holiday in Vienna, which I only I really appreciated after waking up early to go to a yoga class and discovering the studio was closed. Whoops. I called an audible and walked to “you-must-go-to-this-place” coffee shop recommended by a fellow backpacker I met in Budapest. It didn’t disappoint. It was this little hole-in-the-wall shop where the worker was 15 out of 10 stars of helpfulness. She recommended a really tasty drip coffee and then this drink called an Orangeccino, which was double espresso mixed with orange juice that was frothed to give it a consistency of a normal cappuccino. It was incredible.
They didn’t serve food, so she pointed me in the direction of a restaurant known for its brunch, and again her recommendation was absolutely on point. The place was bomb. I spent the rest of the morning walking around, blogging, or napping before hopping on a five-hour train ride to Prague.
It was during this train ride that I realized I'd been marking the dates for the last week as “7-19”, “7-20”, “7-21” and so on as if it was the month of July. It was October. I guess that is what happens when I’ve been traveling out of a backpack for so long - I lose track of my days!
Anyways, I thought my train arrived in Prague at 5:15 and began to pack up my stuff on the train around 5… only to realize at that point it actually arrived at 7:15 pm. Yikes. What a confusing day.
Ambitiously, I booked a 7 am yoga class fully intending to arrive at the hostel, meet some people, and call it an early night. That plan went to shit since the second question the worker asked after “Are you here to check-in?” was “Can I get you a beer? First one is on the house”. The best beer is free beer so of course I said yes. I didn’t want bad karma.
I signed up for the hostel dinner and enjoyed it family-style with around 10 other travelers. After dinner we cleared the tables and began playing a drinking game similar to Kings. As drinking games tend to go, I enjoyed a few more beers and decided to join in on the first part of the pub crawl the hostel was leading. I hit it off with 2 Germans (who’d I meet later on in Berlin) and a Canadian and we stayed out until a little after midnight.
I cancelled my yoga class.
